Double A English |
I am an ESL / EFL teacher in Wrocław, Poland. This blog brings you my (sometimes amusing, sometimes clever) observations on the English language and American culture. Mostly it comprises things I think about when I'm teaching or planning. |
Today’s uncountables: FOOD!
Shrimp … it’s uncountable! I eat shrimp, lots of shrimp, many pieces of shrimp.
Fruit … it’s uncountable when it’s something you eat! I love fruit. I love all kinds of fruit. [BUT … I got a raise due to the fruits of my labor. ALSO “frutti di mer” literally translates to “fruits of the sea” but we usually just call it “seafood”.]
Bread … it’s uncountable! I eat bread. I eat so much bread, all kinds of bread. I eat loaves of bread each week.
Fish … it’s uncountable! We eat a lot of fish at our house. I prepare fish in many different ways: fried, baked, grilled.
Chocolate … it’s uncountable! Chocolate is my favorite food. I love all kinds of chocolate — chocolate with fruit, melted chocolate, chocolate bars.
Asparagus + Lettuce … they’re uncountable! I love asparagus. I like to grill asparagus with garlic and olive oil. I served him 8 spears of asparagus. I also love lettuce. It’s delicious. Every week at the shop, I buy 3 heads of lettuce.
Ice cream … it’s uncountable! I love ice cream. I love all types of ice cream: chocolate, vanilla, strawberry. Ice cream is the world’s perfect food (unless you have lactose intolerance).
You can eat a whole meal with uncountable items. :)
